MET Police E90's?
Discussion
not too sure to be honest. My best mate is a response driver for the met so thats how i know. He was telling me recently about blowing one up with only 30k on the clock so not massively reliable but they do nail them. I can only assume that with the auto the 330d would be quicker as uses the torque. strangley the 5 series are petrols 545 or 540 so doesn't make much sense....

There are unmarked E60s on the M6 around Staffs - they are 530d manuals - I know because I was 'invited' into one for a chat about a year ago and asked the copper who'd pulled me over. He said they did around 50k per year.MidlandDan84 said:
have the Police gone MPG conscious?
The Met certainley have, and they pretty much have an all diesel fleet now

But in London, the high torque and an auto is actually more useful.
Met Police use a mix of 530d and 330d now, I've seen an increasing number of Met Police, 59 plate, 330d Tourings around West London in recent months.
I suppose the 330d has the torque to be quick enough to keep up with most things around London, and the auto keeps their hands free to press all the buttons
Anybody know how they decide to purchase E90's over well less 'expensive' marques, i assume as its public money its all accountable.
Ive noticed a few X5 3.0sd's about, which although do look the dogs danglies in Police livery, they dont exactly look like they have gone for the cheap option

.Must admit, I had forgotten that crucial point.
On a side note, the 'Police Interceptors' (the series on CH5, following the 'Boys from Essex') always make the point that they have Evo's / Scoobies (i hate that term) because they look menacing....and people know they are quick.
I wonder if the E90's are chosen as well because they are a BMW and to most of the Joe public that means 'power and speed' rather than a diesel Mondeo that means 'it was either this or walking'.
Maybe I’m seeing too much into it.

There was an article in BMW car magazine in december or January about BMW Police cars and the issues / benefits. I know the seats were not a strong point for the driver and passenger, but the cars got a huge thumbs up for performance, cost of ownership and reliability. BMW UK lease the cars to the police for a very reasonable rate and will then take them back afterwards.
Hi there,
I bought my E39 Touring 3 litre Diesel a shade over it's 3rd birthday in 2006. Resale value was pretty much non existant as I bought the car so ultra cheap I was initially sure he'd mis-printed the price!
Not sure about the latest generation BMW's that are used in various police forces, but the E39's used in UK forces was a European spec car and very basic at that. I personally don't mind what's often referred to as 'Poverty Spec', it just has meant there's been a lot less to go wrong, break, fail etc!
I bought the car at a few miles over 150,000, it had service stamps in the booklet every month and I understand these are equivalent to Inspection 2's as anything that looks remotely worn or potentially failing is replaced no matter what. I managed 22,000 miles before the auto box gave up, and even with the £1475 I had to pay to get it re-conditioned, the overall price I paid meant I'd still grabbed myself a fantastic bargain. I've also changed various bits on it to update it and to have better equipment, but have stayed well away from trying to retro-fit everything and the usual highly sought after E39 bits.
I'd most definitley buy another ex Police car, for me, reliability and condition is more important than having electric seats or a comms pack!
I've now got around 201,000 and it running very very sweetly indeed, I think re-sale now is probably very low as the 100,000 psychological 'its a very high miler' thoughts still prevail in the UK for cars. However that doesn't bother me as I plan on keeping the car till it gives up. I think then a nice E61 Touring or an F10 Touring will be on the cards for me!
Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

I've often toyed with the idea of an E39 ex-police car after seeing one advertised here some time ago. Even thought about what to fill the holes in the roof, perhaps with a gps, mobile and radio antenna would look pretty cool if a bit geeky.
Hi there
I think I'm allowed to link to my own Photobucket account?
Here's what my car looks like now, obviously the Cops never had it like this !

At the Feb PH meet at Ace Cafe, a number of PHer's liked how clean it is, they were utterly shocked when I told them it's original paint and over 200,000 miles! they'd guessed between 25 and 60K miles !
Cheers! Dennis! West London & Slough UK!
