I've had a couple of issues with the X5. Initially it was random warnings flash up...
"Check coolant level"
"Check brake lights"
Then the battery light came on and off, as did the radio.
The tyre pressure warning light came on and then off again. This morning a I was driving along, when I heard big "clunck" which sounded like the transmission. At the same time the speedo went to zero.
Now the power steering has stopped working, and when you put your foot down the engine revs, but it hardly moves....as if it's running on a single cylinder. Moving it in and out of Drivr/reverse and the car jolts more than usual.

Any thoughts? It's a 2006 4.8is (V8) if that helps.
I'm taking it to a BMW garage later but, as it's in Dubai, they are clueless.

Many thanks for any advice!

Nick, have you looked on Xoutpost - it seems to be a great resource for X series BMWs.

Hello mate,

Never heard of them mate. Are they in Dubai? I think I'll need it recovering, as I'm a bit scared to drive it.

ps - Sorry I didn't get back to you over the weekend....but we were so busy with the out-laws!

Came across something very similar on an E39. It was the terminals on the battery that were causing the problem.

Really? That would explain the electrical issues, but would this also affect transmission?
Sorry, I have no idea about these things.

Just had the call from BMW. They say the alternator, battery and water pump need replacing. 1,500 notes. Does that sound about right?

£1,500 or AED 1,500? eek

Sounds a lot to me with the cheaper labour - or do they charge full UK-type rates?

Na, AED10k!
Funny that when I told them to poke it, the price dropped to AED8,300.

I think it uses a similar ignition switch to the e38, which gets the contacts pitted and goes intermittant high resistance and gives lots of seemingly unrelated electrical faults. as it takes 10 mins to check and the contacts can be fixed for free with sandpaper I would give that a bash first
