E46 330d DDE light on.. ideas?

Tried a search but no topics found. DDE light came on tonight - some loss of ppower, what sort of things might trigger it?

Edit: Recently had fuel pump replaced (under N'S footwell) and have had smell of diesel since then although no appparent leaks in that area)

I had that and it was a fuel rail problem (whatever that is!) It happened when the car was low on fuel and I was cornering quickly - I avoid that now and its not a problem.

Update:

This morning all was ok initially but after a few miles the light came on again and was accompanied by quite a lot of smoke from behind the cam cover - unmistakeably from diesel leaking onto something hot! Again after standing a while all was well again but it seems that the leak is connected. What is there at the back of the cam cover / head to leak & why would put the light on?.
