I looked through the threads on this forum, and didn't find much info about this, so if it's a repeated topic, then appologies for that.
I'm looking to get a new set of pipes for my E36 323i, which currently has the single pipe on it.
It's mainly for looks and a better sound, but a marginal performance gain would also be welcome.
Does anyone know of places near Oxford that deal with this?
My budget is £300.
Also, what implications would the consequent lower back pressures have on the engine?

Thanks,

Will

Hi WillE36

The general consensus is that putting on a performance type exhaust will reduce back pressure to the engine, thus allowing better gas exit. This will have the effect of allowing the engine to breathe better and you'll feel the engine/car feels just that bit more 'sprightly'

In practice, if you were perhaps to just do the backbox, then the effect will be marginally noticeable or not at all, it's not a wow, unbelievable amount of difference type modification.

Your budget of £300 will get you a performance backbox - from the likes of the more budget stainless steel exhaust type places. I put on a Powerflow back box on my E39 Diesel Touring and have been extremely happy with it. cost me £250 fitted around 2 years ago.

As yours is a petrol, you'll benefit from a sound increase that will make the car sound much better, speak to the fitter about reducing boominess and overly loud tones, a nice subtle burble on idle rising to a good sporting note on revs increase when driving without being too loud or droney is what you're after.

Also check to see if some of the branded exhaust manufacturers have something in or around your price range - Supersprint, Remus, Eisenmann etc although some may be significantly more. If you go for a full system, you'll also perhaps release anywhere from 10-15 bhp extra power as well.
