Hi all, this is my first post on a PH forum, though I have been lurking, reading and learning for a while.

I wonder if any 8-series owners can help me with a quick question?

About 3 weeks ago I bought a '98 840Ci (cracking car, puts a smile on my face every time I go for a drive) but I only drove it in the rain for the first time a couple of days ago. The wipers have a slightly strange action, and since I've never owned a BMW before I simply don't know whether this is by design and they are operating correctly or whether something's wrong.

On intermittent, the wiper blades move up, all the way down and then lift up about 4 inches and sit slightly elevated at the bottom of my windscreen. Then for the next wipe motion, they move *down* first to the bottom of the screen, then sweep the whole screen, back down again and then up 4 inches or so again and just sit there. This also happens if I flick the stalk for a single windscreen wipe. When I switch the wipers off, then they move down the few inches and park properly at the bottom of the windscreen.

Do all E31s do this?

Many thanks in advance

mine also dose the same. when its raining and the wipers are on, if you stop at say traffic lights the wipers automatically go to intermittent, when you pull off they go back to normal.
also.
If you have the front windows down and exceed 95 mph the windows will automatically go up. The car thinks you are going to go ballistic. this stops the rear window being blown out and of cause makes the car more aerodynamic.

Do you know. If you hold the unlock button on the keyfob for about 10 seconds. the windows will go down and the sunroof will open.
hold the lock button and the reverse will happen.

If you lock the glovebox you cannot open the boot.this feature secures your valubles while the car is being valeted or serviced.

Have you regestered at 8er.org they will send you the build sheet of the car.

No, this is not correct, your wiper linkage is in the wrong position.

Agree with 8 tech. Only slightly strange action is when they sit for a couple of seconds, about 3 inches from full park position, and then go down to park. You'll notice this when you apply the screen wash

Thanks guys, is it easy to adjust the wiper linkage position? Any pointers on how to do this would be much appreciated.

Cracking car. I'm half considering one now I've sold the Aston. The latest "top marques" has a good article in it, comparing the 840, 850, csi and alpina versions.

Regarding the wiper, on my E39 540 it did the same. It turned out its a known problem, and invovled changing a relay. Cant tell you where it is on the E31, but the symptoms are the same, and I bet the electrics will be the same...
