E34 540. LSD?

Hello all.

I have just purchased a very nice E34 540i auto touring for dog use etc.

Just a quickie-it does not a traction control button anywhere, so does trhat mean it has an LSD?

Unfortunately not Phill, although if you wanted to get one from an E34 M5 I beleive they're a straight swap and would lower the gearing a bit too.

Shouldn't rule out the fact it has one though? SJobson on here had an E34 530 Touring and that had one. Need to jack it up and spin the wheels or look at the tag on the diff case.

Yep, didn't really suit my needs entirely, a bit grown up TBH.

I've got an E34 540i manual and have gone for the lsd from an E32 750i. It's a 3.15 so slightly shorter gearing than standard.

Richard - how has that worked out /what are your driving mpressions? That's a swap I've been contemplating for the slightly shorter gearing.

I think the lsd was fitted to the 750 from 89 until 92, I bought a donor car with a spec sheet confrming that the lsd was there from new.

I don't expect the car to feel much quicker, it's only a jump from 2.93 to 3.15. I believe a few people have fitted a 3.64 from a 525i sport, great for acceleration but rubbish for motorways.

For around $9.99 you can get a full listing of what your (BMW) vehicle was originally supplied with from the factory.

The options are decoded form the VIN number.

I used this, to get a list of options on my '94 525i Sport (E34).

As you can see - it's quite comprehensive.
