Hi, I'm looking for some diagnostic assistance. I've got a 6 cylinder engine which has done 140,000 ish miles.
On start up from cold, there is a slight rattle from the engine, it sounds like it's from the top front. As soon as the oil gets round it quitens down so I'm sure it's nothing serious, maybe a cam shaft bearing?

Is it worth me sourcing the rattle and fixing it or will it keep going for ever like the reputation for these engines?

Many thanks for your help in advance guys.

Not worth looking for it is just the tappet buckets filling with oil. Mine does it (91k miles) and a discussion on another forum is to leave it.As long as it quietens up there should be no problem

My old 325i engine had a bit of a rattle, as do other m50 engines of that age that I've heard. They keep on going and are pretty dam indistructable though. I wouldn't worry about it personally.

Sounds like the hydraulic followers are draining down when the car is left. Not an issue and can be left because if it was a cam bearing, you would need a new head!
