1,500 miles in a £2k E38 750
Discussion
About one month ago I ended up buying a car that I first saw on ebay, bid on, didn't meet the reserve and then went to see and buy.
I have just driven it to and from the Alps, absolutely painlessly (if you can ignore the family's choice of in car entertainment) in all ways except perhaps mileage. Although overall, it managed 22mpg at speeds of between 80 & 120 for most of the journey.
Frankly, it is comfortable, near silent thanks to double glazing and great seals (at low speed, a bit of wind noise when getting quicker), suspension tightens up when pressing the S-EDC button, quick enough in sport or manual (certainly considering it was three up, plus skis and luggage) and entertaining enough when I felt the rear end wander under hard acceleration in the wet out of a toll booth... (past a sleeping Bentley and 911 I may add...)
In some ways it feels a good substitute for a Porsche 928 which I had before a 911 - comfortable, quiet and quick when you boot it. In Sport Mode the 750 is a bit of a hooligan and all the better for it! I can't imagine what could be more fun or practical for the money!
The only downside was that one the front indicators went missing after 800km. Did it pop out or was it nicked over a 2 hour lunch break on the autoroute? Anyway, plenty for sale for peanuts on ebay.
Anyway, I guess that it's a good one - everything works (including cruise control which switches off when you get close to an object in front - how cool is that?) and the odd bumps and squeaks are pretty minor.
Although i've not tried a 740, I reckon it was the right choice - and the difference in price between this and a 740 will pay for plenty of repairs. Finally though, where do you go after a V12? Answers on a postcard.
