I seem to be reading a lot of conflicting information on whether the E46 3 Series ever came with DSP or not. If so it could explain why my gateway 300 wont work.

Anyone able to shed any light on this?

You could try looking over on Xoutpost - they have very good forums for BMW Nav/Stereo.
