E90 screenwash tank sludged up
Discussion
Dropped my E90 off at the main stealer this morning to get the blocked washer jets fixed.
Just been told that the screenwash tank and filter are sludged up, and this is going to cost £236 + VAT as it's not covered under the warranty.
I had the same problem on my old E46 (four years old at the time), and now my two and a half year old E90 does the same thing. Not happy.
What are my options? Is it possible to have a go at removing and cleaning the screenwash tank myself? Or should I take it to a decent indy and get it done for (hopefully) £60-80? Any recommendations for indy BMW places in west London?

If it was mine i would get a hose into the tank and turn it on full pelt, holding the hose as far in, then let it over fow so that eventually as much of the crap will come out. Failing that take the tank out, i would imagine it comes out through the offside wheel arch after removing the wheel and the inner lining, it cant be that difficult, especially if it saves you 250 quid.
Boiling water will help also.
When you next fill up the screenwash, use boiling water and suds (or whichever).
Ask why not covered also - does it tell you to clean out with XYZ. I remember reading in WhatCar about BMW refusing to pay when someone didn't clear around the sunroof seams and water got in.

Do it yourself, it's not hard.
Jack it up, wheel and wheelarch liner off and there is the washer bottle. This needs to be removed and given a serious clean out. It should take you an hour in total.
£236 eh? Nice work if you can get it.
Is it really such an easy job? Other people have suggested that it's a knuckle-skinning pain in the ass to get at the screenwash tank.Jack it up, wheel and wheelarch liner off and there is the washer bottle. There was also a suggestion on E90post of chucking in a Calgon tablet to break up the sludge (assuming it's calcium deposits from the hard water in my area). Will try that first
I'm annoyed at the fact that this was a design fault on the E46 (had the same problem about two years ago) and now my E90 suffers the same problem, and no warranty cover or goodwill gesture is offered by BMW. I always use a decent branded screenwash (Holts or similar), and I've lived in London for around 10 years and never had any problems with the screenwash in my other cars.
