I think I've tracked it down to the butterfly sticking in the throttle body when it warms up, anyone know of a fix for this?

i had sticking throttle on my e34. a quick blast of wd40 on the throttle cable resolved the issue.

You should never lubricate a bowden cable.

The action will get sticky. It's better to replace it.

As for the OP's original observation of a sticky butterfly valve - try some carburettor cleaner.

Fuel injector cleaner might also work - but carburettor spray will be better.

Hi Tony, the cable is fine and the butterfly action smooth, it just sticks shut, I took it apart and cleaned it up with engine degreaser but it wasn't gummed up really and made little difference, I can only assume it expands when warm and the clearances become too small

That sounds like wear to me - I would guess there is probably a fine ridge in the throttle body, in which the butterfly jams when warm.

Is there any adjustment - like a throttle stop or similar?
