Due to collect my car tomorrow and the dealer has just made a sheepish call saying they haven't fitted the iPod kit yet. Not impressed, but don't want to wait for it any longer.

So, I'm looking at the options. The car has the Professional Nav and Logic 7. I am happy to have the basic BMW kit and the functionality it offers.

I've been quoted around £170 for the BMW kit and, as I understand it, fitting is a case of removing the CD changer and replacing it with the iPod interface. No coding is required as the iPod interface acts as a CD changer from the cars perspective.

Can anyone confirm this is correct? Saving a few hundred quid is always preferable!

I think the coding is only not required if your CD player can play MP3 discs already - otherwise it is !

I'll burn a disc tonight to take with me then. Hopefully it will mean something other than the radio on the way home at least.

Reminds me I still need to find a way of blagging a way to get the coding done under warranty

Complain about iDrive freezing up perhaps ?!

£500 for iPod functionality is quite ridiculous

Idrive freezes
Idrive keeps going dead whilst driving
Idrive knob becomes unresponsive
Idrive voice commands very erratic

All valid reasons for a firmware update smile Had mine done recently now have the 2010 graphics and MP3 tagging etc much improved. In my case they needed a new module at a cost of £600 and it was all covered under warranty. You will need to tell them specifically to enable the MP3 tagging otherwise some technicians don't do it themselves. It's a box tick excersise whilst they are doing the update.

You can email the service advisor this link so that he knows exactly what he needs to do

Also another option is a Dension Gateway 500 system - these cost around £300 fitted but are much better than the BMW systems as they allow Ipod connectivity and also USB stick connectivity - they also do add on's (video on idrive screen, parking camera etc).

I'd seen the service bulletin notice linked to on another forum. Will have to take it in for the iDrive freezing "problem" too wink
Thanks for the answer on this.

I had one fitted to my car in this way, and it did take a reprogramming of the car ECU to get it to work. I wouldnt just assume the kit will work on its own. My car was 07 (a 535d) and it needed the programming and it could already play mp3s.

It would pay to shop around various dealers - from memory mine was done for £250 all in.

BTW, its slow to load up from the ipod and doesnt like lots of artists. Best to keep your artist list to a relatively low amount for it work properly.

Subsequent USB connections were grand though.

Turns out the car won't play mp3 CDs so I'm just going to book it in and pay the extra. Will try and get the iDrive system updated too as it has locked up a few times while driving already wink

If the iPod interface is clunky, I'm considering just having the MP3 CD functionality enabled, would save a fair bit of cash too for something that won't really be accretive to the car's value anyway. Let's see.

I understood that there was a service note that says that playing MP3 CD's is supposed to work in the car - and so if you complain about it then they have to do that for free. Once you have that - then that software also enables the CD/iPod cable thing to work. Apparently.

Buy a Dension 500 off ebay, will keep your changer and works better than BMWs ipod interface, pretty easy to install as well.
Drop glove box and splic into back of changer and your done.
