Am considering the purchase of a set of 8J x 17 inch Style 32 Radial spoke alloys for an e39 Touring but seem to remember reading that there were some fitment problems? Also been offered a set of 18 inch ones from the same source but am convinced that they won't fit.

Any advice or guidance will be appreciated

Thanks

I think the 525TDS had same-size Type 32s all round

There were some 18" style 32s for E39s, but they're very rare. Not sure how big the rear tyres are, but if they're 275 section then they probably won't work on the Touring.

I had a staggered set of style 32s in 17" on my 540i Touring and they didn't rub at all, despite BMW not fitting the wider rears on the Touring from the factory. The original style 49s were the same size all round, 8" wide with 235/45x17 tyres. Same as the style 32 fronts I replaced them with, so if you've got a set of 4 fronts, they'll be fine. Though I've seen plenty of Tourings with style 32s from the factory, so they must have been 8" all round.

My previous E39 540 had 18" Style 32s when I bought it. Very nice they were too, the extra inch made all the difference :-)

I think they were more than likely off an E38 though, 8.5 all round if memory serves me correctly.

Wouldn't worry too much about the touring being any different, mine wears 275 on 9.5J at the back which is what Alpina send them out the factory with. Just keep an eye on the offset and you should be fine.

the issue might be to do with the centre bore, the e39 had a larger spigot, so any 3 series type wheel will have a centre hole too small for it to fit

the E39 has a centre bore of 74.1mm where as just about everything else has a centre bore of 72.6mm
another thing to look out for is the offset the 5 series run quite a low offset e.g. et 20 where as the E36/46 run an offset of around et 47
i have just sold a set of 18" style 32s to a mate that came off an E46 325 saloon they were 8" front and 8.5" rear and the offsets were et 47 on the front and et 50 for the rear

Seems that the wheels may be

FRONTS 8J x 17" et20 with 235/45 ZR17 tyres

REARS 8J x 17" et26 with 255/40 ZR17 tyres

You sure there's not a typo? The rears would normally be 9J ET26 with those tyres, which would be the standard staggered sizes.

Sorry, should be 9J not 8J. Am hoping to go and look at them over the next few days wantd to check them out via Pistonheads first in case there are issues but it seems like the staggered ones will be ok.
