I have a 2006 525i that has covered just 14000 miles, 9000 of which I have put on it in the last 10 months since I bought it (what a find!)

The computer is now telling me it is overdue a service as a brake fluid change was due on 1st April, 2 years after it was last changed. However, it will need a microfilter in 4300 miles, an oil change in 8000 miles and an MOT on 9th June.

Would BMW realy expect me to take it in 4 times over the coming months? Does anyone know if brake fluid needs changing every 2 years or has the computer been reset incorrectly last time - I would have expected 3 or 4 years for that?

Car currently benefits from BMW warranty and I wouldn't want to void its terms...

Given its mileage, I intend to let the main dealer service it as they supplied in new and have serviced it to date so not ready for the indy route just yet.
Thanks for your help.

Brake fluid is usually every two years so this seems normal.

Change the pollen filters yourself. They're by the wipers and a 2 minute job, but cost a fair bit.

I have a bit of a crib sheet for manipulating the service data if you're interested, as things like the MOT are a PITA if you keep going main dealer.

Yes, the intervals can some times be a pain - more so if you do higher miles. One point to note, you are not obliged to go to main dealer for MOT which is brought out by the fact that you can reset the MOT interval yourself in I-Drive within the menu.

They now bleed you to death with small cuts rather than going in stright for the kill.

StuB, I would be interested in the crib sheet - if you could email it to me (my email address is in my profile) that would be great and I will owe you a beer! Thanks for the tip on the filters, I'm sure I'll manage that.

I'm also glad that I can reset the MOT myself as it really would be a PITA to go back to the dealers for that!

A main dealer can't charge you more than the statutory rate for an MOT - around £50

If you book an MOT online with Kwik-Fit they charge about £35. Cheapest way I've found to do it.

Yes, £36 at AA Autocentres if you are an AA member.

VW maindealer agreed to £40 for other half's car.

My dealer usually does a Visual Health Check and vacuums the car too, worth the extra IMO

If you look hard enough you can find £20 MOTs - depends on what you're after !!

Kwik Fit is round the corner from me; I had a Vehicle Check at my nearest BMW dealer (12 miles away) a few weeks ago and an oil service due in about 3000 miles, so I'm happy not to have to keep going back to the dealer for absolutely *everything*.

The idea is that the cost is spread out rather than coming in one big lump every year or so I believe.

The idea being that £200, four times a year is less likely to cause complaints than one £800 bill...? At least there's no reason for the dealer to tell you your brake pads need replacing early because it'll be 2 years until they see the car again.

I think there is one very important point to remember about the CBS system. I have owned the 550 now for almost a year. When I purchased the car, there was full history in the BMW system, but not recently before I purchased although the Idrive said approx 14k to oil service. Because I did not have any record of the service I had BMW in Croydon do it for peace of mind and to maintain the full SH. They could not reset the oil service item because of the high mileage to service, so we left it and I was happy (once we had sorted out the fact that they tried to overcharge me 40% on the agreed quotation for oil service:O).

This year, I needed spark plugs and filters within 1k miles of each other, so booked the car in at Blackheath after agreeing a price for a 4 plus car. They did the work and I picked the car up and took it for an MOT a few days later. The MOT passed with flying colours, however they did note that the brakes were down on expected efficiency. A few weeks later I found slow speed and traffic braking lacking bite, so I had my trusted indy give the car a once over re brakes. They found that the front pads were almost down to the metal and indeed the front disks were worn beyond accepted limits. I therefore had them supply genuine BMW pads, discs and sensors and fit them. A bill of £500 or so, even though the CBS system said 16k miles to front brakes service.

The point I alluded to earlier is that all the BMW dealers I have been to (in total 3) ONLY do the items showing in I-drive, and charge extra if you want them to take a look over the car. This seems ludicrous to me as they may have picked up additional work needing doing meaning more money for them, and a safe car for me.....

I don't subscribe to the "spreading the cost" argument because I think most people would just do stuff that is within a few k miles of each other early and therefore generate more money for BMW in the long run. It does depend on mileage that people do though.

In the case of the 550, BMW see it for all I-drive items due and then I also put it through my indy for any additional stuff and general check ups before long trips. This usually means the car is seen at least twice a year in addition to the MOT - but I woudl like to think it is in very condition as a result.

My experiences with BMW dealers have been very poor. Use them if you feel you have to, but in my mind any garage that allows a car needing front brake discs and pads to leave without noticing is either stupid, unskilled or stupid.

On the whole I like the visibility of CBS, but hate the fact that it can be wrong and that it makes you visit the dealeras more often (potentially).
