335i but with higher miles, ok?
Discussion
Yet again, i'm getting the sudden urge to buy something fun after taking a 3 year break from supercharger whining and screaming engines.
It's been a tough 3 years but i think i've finally cracked. I must be honest, at 10am this morning i was searching for a Z4 3.0i, about an 04 model for roughly 10k. I thought, that will be my next toy with some use in the week. I'll keep my car and the wifes car too.
Now its 2am and i've gone almost full circle. I'm thinking, it would make more sense to get rid of 1 car and get a 335i. Seems to tick all the boxes. Appears to be rated as a "fun" yet fairly practical 4 seater, i've got kids. Tax is on the right side of taking the piss and for it's performance it seems to have good insurance for me, and MPG.
However, i'm a little nervous of going too high up the price bracket. I have no clue what a 335i will be like to run, tyres, suspension, twin turbos, servicing etc. I'd prefer to px one of my cars and put in about 5 or 6k just to be safe.
My maths seem to indicate that at 28mpg (which could possibly be slightly optimistic for a combined MPG on a 335i manual coupe) will only cost me £4 per week more than a 335d on my measly 10k pa... i think :s
So now thats out of the way, i would just like to guage what the running costs will be on a higher mileage 335i like 50k, what goes wrong with these, how much to fix, etc, when is the big service and how much would this be. How long do tyres last, with cost to replace etc.
This will be based on a 56/07 335i manual coupe and i'm looking at around 40-60k miles. If i can find a decent example. I hope.... Maybe around 16-18k according to Auto trader so far. But i'm still looking.

I've only had my 325i a couple of months but have a colleague who has a 335i so will chip in my thoughs so far.
You'll be really lucky to get 28mpg, the engines are really efficient on motorway or A road cruising but if you do a commute in traffic like I do your economy drops drastically. Do your sums on 22mpg!
Don't know about servicing yet but tyres are v expensive if you're looking at keeping Bridgestone run-flats that are recommended, my colleague paid £1,250 for a set at Kwik Fit. I haven't looked at prices yet so don't know how much cheaper you'll get if you shop around.
Hope this helps!

The fuel economy will depend on how and where you drive? My father in a 335 convertible is averaging approx 26mpg but that quite a few longer motorway jouneys to bump up the average. When he wasnt doing as much motorway journeys, more local town driving it was averaging about 21/22. I assume a coupe will manage a couple more mpg than that as it doesnt have a metal folding roof.
Unfortunately have no idea on other running costs as his has only done 20k miles.

I got 26mpg out of my mapped 335i sport touring, exactly the same as I got from the 535d sport touring before that.
I would say you will get around 6mpg less than the 335d if only doing 10k miles a year, as I am presuming it isn't mostly motorways, which is where the diesels excel mpg wise.
