1-series diesel.. what's the best?
Discussion
Boring question here, but I'm thinking about getting a 1-series 3-door diesel hatch. Golf, Focus etc bore me to tears, so I want to have a look around some 1-series.
But what's the best balance of performance and economy? Economy being purchase price, fuel consumption and service costs. And it needs to be available second-hand.
My mate says the 116d is dreadfully slow and I should only consider a 120d. I have no idea if this is true, but there is also the 118, 120 and 123d to consider. Are any of them duffers?

I have a 177bhp 120d auto. You would be surprised how much go it has.My ideal would be the 123d mapped to 240+ that would be awesome.
I suggest you have a really good test drive of one making sure you drive some side roads. You may feel the ride is too crashy.
Is that run-flat tyres or the suspension set-up? I am thinking about swapping a Vauxhall Corsa which has appalling suspension AND an Audi TT on big wheels for this, so it needs to do the jobs of both... but neither of those cars has plush suspension that I will miss.I suggest you have a really good test drive of one making sure you drive some side roads. You may feel the ride is too crashy.

The 123d (mapped
) is about 245-255bhp. Had mine for about 2 years now and it's a decent steer.
Running costs are ludicrously low (depreciation/capital outlay excepted) and it's arguably more fun to drive than almost all the petrol powered FWD hot hatches, especially with DSC off and the e-diff activated.
The only complaint I have is that 1st gear is too short, and that it is one of those cars that seems to like being driven quickly
It's considerably quicker than the 120d, but it's also much more linear, so it doesn't always feel it (the single turbo 120 has the typical diesel surge, the 123d feels more 'petroley').

No contest, 123d, M sport is better than you think. Remember that UK roads now are like a gravel stage on a rally so any car is going to be rough ish when you hit a pot hole that can be seen from the moon.
I have a 120d, is great, but wish had gone for 123. 120 is more relaxed long distance as doesn't rev as high. Residuals good on both too. You won't be wiping out hot hatches at traffic lights, but on motorway you will accelerate past anything without knowing you have. So sharp eyes for mr plod are needed. The torque on a remapped one must be crazy.

I'm very close to buying a 123D M Sport. Drove one at the weekend and was surprised at how good the ride was (comparing to a Mini Cooper S and a 320D M Sport)
It's even better when you get rid of the run-flatsGassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
