I'm looking to the collective wisdom of PH for a bit of guidance ...

After a whole year have decided it's time for a change - currently got an 06 plate 325 MSport auto convertible, partly just feel like a change but also feel as though I need a little more bang for my buck (currently £400+ a year road tax and mid 20's mpg)

So, have spotted a 56 plate 335d SE Coupe @ a BMW AUC which I'm planning to see at the weekend, anything I should look out for ?

Would also be interested to get a feel for the sort of deal you experts would be looking for on a part ex (current car fully paid)

Any help/thoughts/guidance etc greatly appreciated

Ive had my '06 E90 335d M Sport saloon for 12 months now, its been great, no trouble, no worries, nothing. Its an excellent car, ticks all the boxes everywhere, so not much else to report, oh yes, i came from a Golf GTi 150 PD which was 450GBP to insure the beemer came in at .....285GBP, how does that work? Dont get me wrong im not complaining, just that a Golf worth maybe 7k against the BMW worth 22k at the time of purchase and the power difference is phenominal, yet the insurance is cheaper.

Thanks guys ... am very much liking the idea of a decent amount of power, and lazy definately suits me ! As for spirited driving or pushing on .... I wish I could find a road where I could do that without getting scamera'd. Just looking for something that doesn't have to have a think then kick down before letting me overtake.

Anyone have any idea on the sort of deal I should be aiming for ? I realise I could get cheaper buying private, but being such an incompetent at anything remotely useful and having minimal 'car' knowledge I'd be crazy to stray away from a BMW AUC.

Why shouldnt you buy private, i did but made sure the car still had 6 months warranty to run then re-newed the warranty when it came up to 3 years old, so what you save on the difference between a dealer and private sale you use on the warranty extension.

I'm in the same position

I started out with my heart set on a new 3.0i 272bhp coupe, but it had to be the exact spec i wanted for around 20k. I can't find one but i love the engine.

I had reservations of how often i'd hit the real upper end of the power band, especially as i want an auto for the arduous town driving.

Anyway, now i'm after a 335d coupe too. There are plenty around, but we both missed an excellent buy down south. Acorn had a 57 plate low miles 335d m-sport with toys and v.nice red leather for 22k, lower with a bit of negotiations.

All's i would like to know now, from owners is, what go wrong with these 335d's. I've heard of turbo failure. Scary out of warranty. Do owners buy extended warranties? If so how much are they?

Ive had mine for 12 months now, all i have had go wrong is an indicator repeater got fogged up (condensation inside) it was changed under warranty, thats been it. I have taken the extended warranty last September and paid 485 full comp with 200 excees with BMW (Mondial) this incudes BMW emergency breakdown too so i think its an excellent deal on a car which if it blows a turbo or both is going to cost the best part of three or four grand to fix.

That is pretty good for a BMW warranty.

I think i would be happy to pay that too, especially if i had warranty work in my 1st year, which i assume you get free if you buy from BMW AUC.

Still a scary though that with insurance, road tax and warranty i'm looking at 1k per year to run without fuel at 10k P/A. wAHOOOO :P

You also get the warranty work free if you buy private too, its transferable free of charge, but its not transferable if you buy from an independant car dealer/seller.

I would be looking at a 07 plate car i think. Out of warranty, but don't they come with a 1 year warranty anyway, if you buy from a BMW approved used car dealer?

Yes you should get the one year from a BMW dealer, but you will pay dealer price for the car, maybe 2k upwards more than from a private sale. If you buy a late 07 car privately it will still have the residue from 3 years warranty so you will get it much cheaper and you will save, buying privately is not always so difficult if you know what you want and what to look at and check it has full history......it can be very painless, i did it and would never do it any other way.

The thought of buying a 15k high mileage 335d and getting a BMW warranty hasn't skipped my mind either, I would be saving a good 6 or 7 k.

You must be careful with the high milage, when you extend the warrany there is a limit when they will extend and i think its 60k miles, if its over that they wont extend it, you will have to go to an independent insurance type warranty and then youre on dodgy ground.

Had any issues roofer?

You should be best qualified out of all of us to let us know what the general running costs are.

E.g. how much for the services, do BMW like to stick a lot of extras on there that need fixing? And how much are these things.

With insurance being nearly £600 for me, tax £230 and fuel economy probably around 33mpg i just need to make sure the service bills aren't going to ramp up ownership costs. smile

Cheers
