I've got exactly the same sort of problem with mine at the moment. When I'm accelerating its fine but when it gets to idle its all over the shop. Sometimes its fine and holds steady at 600 and sometimes it bounces between 500-1000.

Possibly Idle Control Valve needs a good clean or a pipe somewhere causing an air leak.

Airleaks, TPS, Idle valve are a few guesses, sometimes even the cam/crank sensors can act a little odd, but it's a little too clear cut in this case

A friend is going to bring round his box of magic and plug it in and see if any fault codes come up,will let you know the outcome.

Mine did this, often stalled when idling at the lights regardless of whether the engine was cold or warm. Turns out the breather pipe was cracked. Replaced breather pipe and all is fine - she idles like a champ.

If you're still stuck Gary drop me a PM, i have Carsoft diagnostics which we can plug in and have a look at, for the cost of a cuppa of course.

Take the intake cover off and see if the breather hose that runns from left to right is split.
Also check the pipe that runns from the maf to the intake for splits or it may have come undone at the join in the middle..
