Hi folks,
Anyone out there ever owned a new shape 520d?
What sort of real mpg figures were you getting. I'm tempted by one but everywhere i look, magazines, online etc come back with different figures!!
Cheers,
Muffster.
Engine upgrades and Efficient dynamics changes are the cause of the varying figures.Anyone out there ever owned a new shape 520d?

What year are you thinking of / whats your budget? SE or M Sport?
Best to say what you have now and what you are averaging from that, can probably tell you what to expect from the 520d then.
The 163bhp car was far worse, even more so with the early auto 'box.
I would say 34mpg from the 163bhp auto, 39mpg from the 163 manual and then 38mpg from the 177 auto and 45mpg from the 177 manual.

I've got a '59 520d se manual. In mixed driving 45+mpg is easily achievable.
My motorway commute of 145 miles each way gives 54mpg at a true 70mph.. at 80mph it might give 51mpg and at 90mph 47mpg. The figures seem pretty good for a heavy 177bhp car, however this car and my previous 320i Msport are the first cars where I've got worse mpg than the combined figures - no idea why, but never the less its very efficient.

I can believe the mid-40s mpg figures; I bet it's possible to get well into the 50s if you're doing some gentle motorway cruising.
When I picked up my 545i in February, cruising down the A12 and M25 at about 80, mpg readout sitting around the 40mpg mark, I was wondering quite how economical a 520d would be. So it's interesting to see the real world figures.
ETA: my car doesn't average 40mpg, by the way! That was just from the economy meter...

It's a wonder how much of a difference how you drive impacts.
I have a 120d coupe, and is on about 5k miles now and has started to run in better. I find if I drive like my mum then I can get 55mpg no problem, but that's no faster than 70, more like 50-60 on a roads and 65 on motorway inner lane.
Then if I am keen to get home I just give it some beans and then it goes way way down to 44-45. I think the cut off point is hitting much above 65mph and you loose alot. 520 will be same or worse as a big heavy Beast. To be fair the question on mpg is fairly open ended on any car, it depends how you drive. If I drive it like I stole it then 42, then on a 123d I had that would be around 38-39. Looking at that way anything else is a bonus.
It is worth noting that a 330 petrol will do (if driven like your mum drives) about 37-38 on steady eddie mode.
At the end of the day if you enjoy driving that much for the price of a new 5 series you may as well save and get an economical shed and then something that makes you smile at the weekend.
