E39 gearbox failure
Discussion
Most gearbox places will do a rebuild for quite a lot less than that. Have a look at the Fedauto website

Hi Fezzaman
Lots and lots of long and detailed threads in the specific E39 forums/sections about the auto gearbox. You've been unlucky it's given up at such a low mileage. They 'tend' to let go at around 150K - however theres instances all over of low 70K milers giving up and some that are on their original gearboxes at 250K+ miles. Mine lasted 172K miles for instance.
I did a lot of research when I had it reconditioned. I eventually took it to Automatic Man in Acton, £1250+ VAT using genuine BMW internals and a 3 day turnaround. Other places wanted 1800,2000,2250+ VAT. I'm now on 202K miles and 3 years later and gearbox is totally fine.
So a thumbs up from me for these guys - there is a thread on another forum where someone says they were charged £1100+VAT i believe it was, and the place is on the south coast of the UK, around or towards Bournemouth I seem to recall.
Hope this helps, Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks guys for the quick and useful responses!
Which forums detail the issues etc? It really annoyed my parents given we've serviced the car (and our new car) there bang on time without fail at the same dealer for the last 6 years and they have a 'take it or leave it' attitude. If they weren't so close we'd much rather use a different dealer but that's a different story eurgh.
And what are the arguments for/against reconditioned boxes as opposed to a new one/or where can I find this information? The idea of a recon box will probably scare my parents. And the quote for a new one is not far off the car's value itself I'd imagine. The other problem is what do you do with the car if you decide to not fix it...
cheers again for the help!

Hi fezzaman
A reconditioned box is built using genuine BMW parts, the BMW dealers themselves will probably sub contract work out to specialists anyway. You are basically paying a much lower rate of labour charge per hour than BMW. Unless your wallets are fairly fat and bottomless, makes much more sense to go to a specialist gearbox reconditioning place.

Have a search through some of the posts, the gearbox thing comes up quite often !
Cheers, Dennis!
