04 X3 vs 02 X5

Have a budget of around 10k wondering which is the more prudent buy in terms of total cost of ownership over 24 months? Is the X5 that much better to drive when driven under normal suburban conditions. Will be used by the wife with 2 car seats in the back for mainly local runs etc. I felt the X3 was a little tacky inside but not been in the X5 to compare.

X5 without a shadow of a doubt. X3 is probably the worst car in BMW's line up (even the local BMW main dealer's sales guys agree with me on that one!)
