Namely this one in particular.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1726240.htm

just been to look at it and I've got a few questions that I need answering.

Firstly, I know it's a common fault but the alloys were quite badly corroded? At this price does that seem fair? Also the drivers bolsters are fairly worn and one has a small hole(around a 5p size). Can it be repaired?

Everything else seemed ok, drove nice pulled well no clutch slip from low down and braked in a straight line.

Also there were two green lights on the service indicator.

Also are the odo adjustable in brightness as on the move I couldn't really read the mileage that well?

He is fairly fixed on the price, I'm not sure how much they are worth being a fairly niche car.

Hi,
I bought mine in April and paid £2250 for it. I have had a lot of trouble with the engine on mine and have found out the head had warped due to overheating, if the one you are looking at seems in good working order the engine will probably be ok though.
Mine has 120,000 mile on the clock and the interior has a few marks on it but no holes and still feels like it has a lot of life left in it.
My alloys are the same as the car in the link and they are prone to becoming corroded which mine have quite badly frown
I agree with the dash display mine is very dull and I cant really read it correctly, im not sure if they fade with age or were just made like this.
Other thing to look for is rust on the rear behind the back wheels and also on the boot lid.
Id say it seems a fair price as I think mine was up for cheaper as the seller knew it had problems.
Im currently putting mine back together now and I have to say it is an easy car to work on.
Sorry I cant be more help.

I have a '99 T 318is and the brightness of the instruments is adjustable with a little wheel on the lower part of the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel.

In regards to the engine, rheim going to look at a 135k mile example, the car appears very tidy, leather inside looks very unworn etc its full BMW service history from new. What sort of mileage do these cars run on to? should i be worried t he mileage is high its on a 97 P

In a word, no

As long as its been serviced (and has proof) then these things will run for a very long time.

The 328i I have atm is on 147k - feels absolutely fine and I previously had a 320i which was on something silly like 250k and it was still running very sweetly.

As always with these sort of cars condition and history are a great deal more important than the amount of miles it has covered. One good thing to check though is the state of the suspension as it makes a world of difference to how they feel when being driven if bits and bobs are shagged!

I want a hellrot red one more than any colour but obviously I dont want that to influence my decision. Does this seem like a good car? I think its worth a look, i, awaiting pictures of the interior

Looks OK but not much info given.

My brother just picked up an absolutely mint condition low miler for just over 4k. Reckon he could have asked 5k and it would still have sold.

mines on 140k and everything is fine. No rust etc. bear in mind at that mileage though it will need most of the bushes in the suspension changing. Also anything pre 98 will have nikasil engine unless it was changed under warranty.

I paid a little under 2k for mine with no rust/ good tyres/ full SH/ good condition alloys etc.

hmm maybe this is a little overpriced then? I did speak to the chap this morning and he is going to send me some info via email and more pics. I do believe its not had the alusil engine under warranty. Hmm

What sort of cost am I looking at for bushes to be replaced.

can you post the details of this car as i cant view the ad at work... its funny with hyperlinks etc.

the bushes vary massively as to which bush it is. Rear trailing arms are common and a pretty labour intensive job (read bd job). Christ knows what bmw would charge, one indy quoted £254 IF the bolts came out ok, my car is booked in at a different indy tomorrow for £60 per side. Parts are only £12.50 each so gives you an idea of labour involved!

With the engine your basically taking a risk with the block, they replaced nikasil with Steel linered block as opposed to alusil BTW. Google it and then make your mind up about whether you want to take the risk. Some say if its done that mileage/age then it will be fine, others say its a ticking time bomb. I very nearly cancelled the viewing on my car and went to see another but when i phoned the guy he said it had a replacement block at 50,000 which i called BMW and they confirmed.

Rust is a killer on these cars too so be wary and look around bootlid/both front and rear arches and door bottoms. While your looking at the rear arches take a look at the brake pipes too, mine are slightly corroded and indy man wants £200 to replace them as you need to drop the fuel tank.

A refurb of the wheels will probably cost you around £400

That said.... i utterly adore my car!

heres the ad

Up for sale is my bmw 328 sport. As the pictures show, the car is in very good condition. It has full black leather, original mats, full first aid kit and tool box. The car has just been MOT'd, and has 4 months tax on it. It has new tyres and a full service history. ALL BMW service history except the last stamp. The car goes and sounds amazing and is a pleasure to drive. I will be sad to see her go but its time for a change. Also i have more pictures if you would like me to email them to you.

I spoke to him today and he said the interior is unmarked which after seeing a quite a few now i believe to rare! awaiting more pics and answer to some questions.

You don't actually need to drop the tank unless you want to route them the same way. You can route them round the side of the tank to save disturbing the tank ( and saving a fair bit of labour cost ). Indy garages will do that if you ask them - will also pass MOT no problem

That's fair enough - it was just in case you wanted to save some cash smile

i like to save cash but i have thing really annoying thing called OCD. i even had to straighten up my cigar lighter to make sure it was facing the correct way. Due to it being old its a bit loose in the hole (oo err!) so it keeps turning and i keep having to straighten it up. Very annoying.

BMW replaced the Nikasil engine for an Alusil (or was it steel lined?) in March 1998.
Given that this is a '99, I wouldn't worry about that, as it doesn't apply to this particular model.
Just checked the ad, and it's listed as sold, so I figure either you or the seller has made their decision.

Frankly if you get a good one (which this may well be for a 1999 with sub 100k miles and if its been well looked after), then to my mind this is a cracking price for a cracking car...

You'll always be able to get cheaper... a few hundred quid is neither here nor there if you buy the right one in the first place.

My 1998 alusil block car (Titanium, individual blue interior, HK, htd seats) has been 100% perfect since the day I bought it in 2007, as it was for the previous owner, a mate of mine since he bought it in 2005... car now has around 95k miles on it and I recently timed it with my vbox 0-100mph at 17.2s with a soft launch... thats as good as the time Top Gear got in 1997 proving just what a gem this engine is. Car is 100% stock but has wanted for nothing in terms of maintenance during its life.
