I would have thought that 'newer BMW's' Z4, E46 onwards etc would have some form of warning when the brake pads need replacing? Is this true?

Embarassingly with not driving it all that much I have neglected to check and yesterday got a bit of grinding so stopped to check and fronts do need replacing.

So it's booked in to have them sorted this week.

I believe so, never seen it. I'm told there's a sensor that (generally - because it's easy to break) needs replacing when you change the pad.

Ah well that's brake pads to add to the tyres and oil change for this month then.

Nightmare.

A Z4M Coupe of my acquaintance certainly has a warning light. A track day made that apparent! banghead

Wonder what else could be causing the grinding noise then assuming the sensor isnt already broken?

Best to just let them look at it when it goes in I reckon.

You might be able to see them through the wheels.

They do have a sensor as standard, fitted one side only (AFAIK), but sounds like previous keeper may have used cheap repacements without replacing the sensor.

You can get these from your stealer, GSF or most motor factors, uncluding the wear sensor (which clips onto the outer edge of the pad). To re-set (sensor replaced), switch and leave ignition on until warning symbol goes out.

All warnings should be lit when you put your ignition on BTW.
