I'm going to put my Z4 up for sale on autotrader soon, so thought that I should do some research on the competition.

My car is an early 3.0 with average miles, so needs to be priced accordingly. Having done a search on all the 3.0 cars in the country I hpi'd the three cheapest -
All three have been written off, Cat B, Cat C and Cat D respectively, with no mention of it in the adverts. Cat B cars are meant to have the bodyshell crushed!

This is just a word of warning (not a shameless plug to enquire about my car!). Always spend a few pounds researching the history of a car before buying it, regardless of how genuine the seller might seem (they might not know about it's past).

I'm desperately looking for the right 335d and i've hpi'd about 6 or 7 cars now and a handful have outstanding finance with a couple of them being private owners. Most decent people would clear the finance you would think but you never know.

Always worth HPI-ing.

Good luck with the sale

Many people cannot afford to settle the finance without selling the car.
I'd have no issue buying a car on finance as long as I was paying the finance company directly and then give the difference to the owner.

Precisely.

Most high end cars are financed, so this is hardly something that should come as a surprise.

Yep, nothing wrong with finance. The car I bought had £3k MORE than I was paying for it still owing on the car. I got him to pay the £3k before I even got there and then paid BMW over the phone for the rest.

Finance is ok, until ofcourse you turn up with the cash in your hand to buy, do a quick HPI and find out it's financed, even though you specifically asked the seller whether the car had any finance before you set off. 'Oh I thought i mentioned it'. Did you fk you stupid bh. Now i've travelled 3 hours, it's 10 at night and i can't take the car. Oh and it transpired she owed £500 more than the price.

The best bit?

She worked in a car dealership, but claimed she didn't realise she had to tell me about the finance.

Who's the mug though.....?

Me - For not HPI'ing till i was happy with the car, should have done it before setting off.

Me no. 2 - for coming back in a week to buy and pay the finance co. as i really wanted the car.

Finance on cars is new to me - i always pay cash

I'm saying that without HPI-ing i would never have known about the outstanding finance, the sellers never mentioned it either. And as i said before, you would think most decent people would clear it with the cash you gave them.

But i prefer to HPI, check, make sure it is paid off before i hand over the cash.

There's plenty of dogs out there too, I looked at a few before mine, amazing how badly some are treated - but it's all reflected in the price anyway wink
