Does it sound a bit like this:

If so, it's hydraulic lifters.

If it's only ticking on tickover but getting quieter as revs rise it may be No5 plug working loose (but check No's 4 & 6) if not I would suggest fresh oil and an Italian tune up.
Ragging a car making a mechanical ticking noise, genius advice there! To quote the owners manual for the M50 engined e34 525i page 65
after a lengthy period driving in heavy city traffic or in a slow moving queue, let the engine "breathe deeply" by driving for a few kilometres above 3000rpm. This will disperse any soot deposits in the combustion chambers.

If you think an Italian tune up is extreme then the prefered method for tuning a two stroke back in the seventies would make you faint!
The riders would go on track and work the bikes hard enough so the piston would just start to nip up. The engine would be stripped and the high spot where the piston had rubbed in the bore would be polished out, this would be done a couple of times until the tuner was happy or ran out of braveness. The engines had some very strange clearances when cold but once hot they were fine.
