at the age of 44, I've finally bought the car I fell in love with when I was 18.

It's a clean, tidy 1996 example but it has the wrong wheels on it. The bodywork and interior are in need of a bit of love to bring it up but I want to replace the wheels with the option 299 Bolted Cross Spokes that it would orginally have been supplied with.

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of where I can source some - original or replica.

I'll be putting new tyres on it too, so I'm open to tyre/sheel packages if anyone knows of a good deal.

I hope you'll excuse my ignorance, but the tyres on there at the moment are different sizes betwen front and back. What would it have had on from the factory ?

Thanks in anticipation.

They are a bugger to keep clean. I'm thinking of getting rid of mine and changing to the Alpina type. What have you got at the moment?

If you look in the driver's door shut it lists all the factory combinations and tyre pressures!

It's got some very messy things supposedly off a 7-series. Pitted, rusty and leaky !

I've got some 14" BBS cross-spokes on my Eunos Roadster and agree that they're an absolute pain to keep clean. Although I had the 20-spoke Style 32s on my old 540i Touring and just the number of spokes is still tedious compared to something like the throwing stars, which were also fitted to many 840s.

hi bud
i own a 850 and would just like to warn you about getting none bmw wheels ....mine was fitted with m5 look alikes and the car had a very bad judder just as f the wheels needed balancing all the time i paid to have them checked for alignment buckle etc and they was perfect i fitted them with .5mm hubcentric rings to tighten them to the hubs all in vain.
I spotted some throwing star wheels on a scrapped 850 paid £300 to have them refurbished and now as well as them looking awsome they run perfect and are easy to clean. these have different sizes front and rear and there arnt many matching tyres available i opted for falkens which still cost £400+ for the 17" wheels .... hope this helps

I think the 8 screams out for 19" wheels which make the 8er look more modern,

That's the problem I have - some 'big' wheels look great, but my aim was to return the car to it's original condition - really look after it, have three years motoring and sell it in great condition rather than tired or overly modified.

Mine needs a tiny bit of bodywork on the near-side rear wheel arch and a good polish and valet - other than that - it's in great nick. I took it to an event for work recently and Derek from West Suffolk Racing looked over it or me and said it was solid and sound. So, I'm happy I haven't bought a complete bag of spanners, but I do understand it won't be cheap to run (£500 of fuel for the first 1200 miles of 'spirited' motoring!) or cheap to maintain.

Has anyone found a good solution for the computer console which has pixel problems ?

I found some guy in Germany who'll recondition them for £250, but I suspect it's only a dry joint or faulty display driver chip, so £250 is quite steep ...

The best bet would be some "M" parallel's in 18", an option on all the 8 Series, and the most popular aftermarket fitment. Pattern wheels are OK and you should go for 18" with the wider wheel on the rear, known as staggered. Many wheel suppliers do all 4 the same width. They should be 245/40x18 on the front and 265/40x18 on the rear although you can fit up to 295 width with the correct offset.
17" wheels are the comfort option but look too small for the car and 19" look great but give a harsh ride.

Hark the man, he talketh sense, and is the 8 Meister!

Personally I'd say the best wheels on an 8 are 18" Alpina (classic 20 spoke) or 18" M parallel.

17" 'throwing star' though original are too small, especially on the front. Anything bigger than 18" just looks wrong on a classic car, IMHO.

This thread has been going on far too long without someone saying......

"Get sum like 22 Inch Chromies man like in it".

Slightly more seriously Image do a wide rand of split rim wheels up to 22 Inches in diamiter and 14 Inches wide.

Personally like the Alpina 18" but a devil to get hold of for sensible cash. New over £500.00 each but available from stealers and others.

Good luck with the car....Superb machines

I hope you all approve - I went for these in the end smile

235/40R18 Falken FK452 tyres front / 275/35R18 Falken FK452 tyres rear

I had to start somewhere and my budget wouldn't stretch to a premium brand rubber.

(same argument explains why I have two children wink )
