Curious change, 1.8d is frugal and nippy ish but not quick. Not huge inside, boot useless, looks like a breadvan, but coupe looks cool and turns heads. Costs pennies to run.

The sport models are very firm, so my advice if you are getting one is to try sport and none sport. Bear in mind too that they come with run flat tyres which are pants. The car will drive, grip and feel better in every possible way with go flat tyres.

I found the 1 series insipid. It's a BMW for people who just want the badge.

Until the electronics go wrong then they can cost many pennies

Edited to add - never in a million years would I swap an 8 for a 1er. I have promised myself that I will own a CSI or a B12 one day - lots of pennies to save up first though...

Disagree...the 1 series is a great car in it's sector, I certainly would have still had one if it had a different badge.

OP I would imagine you'd regreat the change but it's all down to your needs.

I'm at the end of my second year of owning a 118d and have not looked back, economical when she needs to be (achieved 57, 57 & 55mpg over the last 3 tanks of fuel) which is essential as I generally cover 600 miles a week, cheap tax, cheap insurance, long service intervals and you can still have some fun, although having remapped aids in the fun. I think the quality is better than the competitors, or certainly was in 2008 when I bought. I will be keeping hold of this one for probably another 2 years and will be considered the 123d (or what ever varient BMW has decided on by then) after that.

Citing MPG isn't a very PH thing to do.

I'm also firmly in the 1-series camp. I used to take the piss and trot out all the clichés, but d'you know what? It's a properly good little car.

not gone yet as i have to wait on the car getting prepared and my reg plate getting swaped over,i will miss my 8 but i think the 1er will be more practical and cheep as chips to run, dtuk do a chip which gives better mpg and more bhp 205bhp not to bad for a small car.

Nice one thumbup

My only worry would be that you might find the ride a bit harsh after the 8 but I guess you already know that changing the RFTs will sort it.
