E39 540 central locking gremlin

Got a strange one with the 540. When i get out of the car the 'lock' button on the key does not lock the car. If i lock it with the key then press the 'lock' button the interior lights come on (as they do normally)....so that means the car knows the 'lock' button is being pressed. 'Unlock' and 'boot open' buttons work fine.

Any ideas?

Oh, every now and then (like 1 in 10 times) it will lock from the button.

Its not a range issue either.

Sounds like it's out of sync, maybe: do you have a second key? Worth seeing if that's the same.
In the past, when mine's mucked about, I've disconnected the main battery to let it reset to factory, which resolved it.
