2008 730d what to look out for?
Discussion
so i'm thinking its time i had a barge
something like this

i know its going to depreciate horribly, the new model is out and its lots better ( and double the money ), it probably won't fit on my drive, and should anything go wrong its going to cost me ££££ - hence going for a BMW approved one to get a good warranty built in
anything else i should watch out for on these?

A couple of grand more, for a 'Sport' spec in a great colour with only 7k on it.....
Or this....

Something with warranty left is a good idea. I bought a two year old approved 730d which in the first year lunched its nav unit, had a knackered passenger door handle, a leak from cylinder head and something else expensive that I can't remember because I didn't have to pay for it. There's easily a couple of grand's worth of work there at BMW rates.
To the car's credit however, it's been fautless in the year and half since it's been out of warranty and the running costs have been no greater than plenty of much less grand cars I've run. The car gives you effortless waft yet will give you 30mpg+ all day long. I also wouldn't worry too much about depreciation as you're already halfway down the curve with a £20-25k car and you could easily run one of these for five years without ever needing something else by which time a tidy car will give you your deposit back. I'm nearly three years into running mine and there's really only a new F01 7er I'd replace it with and they won't be in my price range for a while yet!
In terms of things to look out for if you buy approved then mechanically and electrically everything will be 100%, with a trip straight back to the dealer if anything's amiss. More important is getting the right spec in the first instance. Not much is missing as standard but as stated above, the Sport spec is desirable as you get the 20" wheels, dechroming and some of them also come with the darker matt grain wood which is a bit more youthful than the high gloss grain in most UK cars. The optional Logic 7 stereo is worth having, as is the powered bootlid, comfort seats, privacy glass and adaptive cruise control.
Size-wise it's a big car but the superb PDC with top down view means there aren't many spaces you can't tackle and I've never been defeated yet. More of an issue is the width of the car, which in the very occasional multi-storey can leave you with a tight squeeze to get in and out, but that's true of stuff like Rangeys, Q7s and X5s too. The car feels like a limo to passengers but never to the driver, where it shrinks around you and drives much like any well sorted BMW. In fact I'd go as far as to say that the handling is better sorted than the F01, imho.

Yep nothing wrong with a petrol one but you'll find most of them are long wheel base models which means even more of the car sticking out in the road. I think the 745 was dropped after the '05 facelift for the 750. Petrol 3.0 swb models are rare indeed, but if you can live with the extra length then a 750Li or even a 760Li will put a VERY big smile on your face, at least until you have to put fuel in it!

As Benny says the 745i was dropped after 05 however it was replaced with a 740i. Which had a few less BHP but nothing to speak off. Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
