bought my 04 plater 330d at 47k miles, now has 135k miles and has had:
front lower wishbone bushes (rear) 3 sets so far
EGR cooler thermostat failed open at 85kmiles
propshaft rubber donnut coupling at 95k miles
all brake discs and pads changes at 100k miles (normal wear and tear items really)
turbocharger - failed at 100k miles
inlet manifold, changed for safety at same time as turbo as significant slop was present in the port closing flaps
clutch & DMF at 105k miles, both preventatively changed for safety (dmf showed significant wear and damage) as the trans had to come out to fix a weaping core plug on the back of the block
full set of rear suspension bushes at 120k miles
full vehicle set of dampers at 120k miles
new front upper damper top mounts at 120k miles
just changed trans and diff lube (fit for "life") but were both horrible at 130k miles of use
however, it does drive just like a new one now.............
That makes it souund bad, but really it's been a great car, but they are big heavy grippy torquey cars, and if you drive em hard (like i do) then they will need some TLC
(mine also tows my rally car around the country, so it does get used)

I have a 02 plate 330D (E46) and it had 150K on the clock when I bought it (FSH etc). I have serviced the car myself and the only major issue I have had is the inlet manifold split (as they are made of plastic) which cost 450 quid! Asides from this it has only been brakes and tyres really. It is starting to feel a little old now, but it has now done 185K!!!
I would say do a bit of research and look on bmwland.com as there are issues with autos and the later 6 speed cars ingesting their inlet flaps!
I would recommend one to anyone!
