Hi

Looking to buy an X5 (old shape). Have a budget up to about 20k. Prefer a petrol as we don't do a lot of miles <20k a year.

Looking at 2005/5 cars, under 50k

Any advice on what to avoid, look out for? Is it worth getting a warranty on a car this old? The BMW approved service seems pricey.

Any advice very much appreciated.

Had a 2004 X5 4.8iS - fantastic car. Some things to look out for:

Panoramic sunroofs can develop a fault which generally requires a new cartridge - an expensive repair if not done under warranty

All 4.8 X5s have air suspension which can develop faults - anything from sensors to air bags or control modules - again can be expensive to repair. Check that the ride height adjust correctly when using the switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel

The automatic gearbox can develop problems - look out for a lurch when changing gear.

I would definitely recommend them, but it has to be remembered that in particular the 4.8 was £60-£70k with options so has this level of running costs - really wouldn't consider running one without a warranty (BMW is best, but expensive if the vehicle has >60,000 miles)

Have a look on X5drivers.co.uk (if it's up and running again) for more information.

Options worth having are comms pack (DVD based navigation, TV tuner, bluetooth phone), panoramic roof, comfort seats are very nice. Note that 2005 onwards have a hybrid digital tuner which superceded the analogue tuner of earlier models.

Realistically around 18mpg - can be more on long runs - saw 23mpg on a trip to France, but mix in some stop/start town driving and shorter runs and 18 mpg is about as good as I've been able to achieve.

If it helps the Mrs had the old shape X5 3.0 petrol for a couple of years (gone now) that averaged 18 mpg too and whilst performance was adequate that's all it was. So no benefit at all from buying the smaller capacity petrol.

Agree with this, we had a 3.0 petrol manual probably did 22 without the drag of the autobox but in all honesty the 4.4 and up is the way to go, possibly could LPG a standard 4.4 quite successfully to cap running costs.

I have a 4.4 petrol and get 24.5 on a run and 17ish around the houses.
Worth making sure all the speakers work (£850) if not. Check fan speeds all work ok. Not dear but a fiddle and flattens the battery if not.
The steering wheel adjuster goes too. (£650)
Gearboxes are C£2500 and normally see about 110k miles.
Rear suspension bushes go too about 85k miles.
Seems the engines are good for lots of miles though.
I really do like the car, great for mile munching.
