My brother is thinking of getting a new car and I have come up with a short list of "options" for him.

One of these is the 123d, I remember reading rave reviews for them but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the day to day use? Are they are good as the reviews say they are?

Was thinking of one like this which looks good:

Don't debate, just buy one. For the money and MPG there is no other car that will make you smile as much. You can drive it like your gran and it will go on thin air, or drive it like Schumacher in a german taxi and it will still give good MPG.

On the motorway it will pull like a pig, but the one gripe is that it won't tick over a 2000 revs at 70mph, so some can find it a bit of drag on very long runs. Moral of the story though is just take an A/B road and enjoy hoofing it round a bend.

Enjoy

Absolutely cracking car / engine IMHO, Ive had mine for 18 months and cant think of anything that would give as good performance, economy and driving fun. I certainly dont hang around and yet have never seen lower than about 41mpg over a tankful, and usually its around 45mpg.

As has been mentioned above though, its not a great motorway mile muncher at big leptons because it's relatively short geared compared with many of the VAG diesels etc. My wife's got a Seat Altea FR with the 170bhp 2L VAG diesel as you'd get in a top end Golf diesel and that's a fair bit lower revving in 6th for better motorway cruising, but overall the 123d engine is leagues ahead in refinement and power delivery.

The only slight issue to look out for is clutch judder in certain circumstances on the manual box. Mine did it and had the clutch changed once under warranty about a year ago at ~18 months old, but although Ok to start with its come back again to a lesser extent and will be going back in before the warranty runs out later this year to get it looked at again. Its a well known issue (see here) which BMW don't seem to have a proper fix for. It doesnt do it all the time by any means though, mainly when hot and the car has sat for a while so I notice it perhaps once or twice a week at most, but still annoying.

Have to say i haven't had this problem on mine. The only thing mine needed in the 2 and half years i've had it was the iDrive screen replacing as there was something loose inside it that was rattling about, and another rattle around the rear seats (they put some foam in), and aother one under the passenger seat (which turned out to be a pound coin... which they decided to keep!).

It's a really difficult car to "move on" from because the performance/£ ratio is so good and it really is great to drive (especially with the traction off).

Haven't had anyone contact me (although i've only used a free advert on here) so i'll probably end up keeping it for another year.

Another for the clutch judder.

All the manual 1ers and 3 series have been badly affected. Some are fine some are not.

My wifes had 2 flywheels and 3 clutches and various software upgrades. Dealer replaced it. No problems now except for a slight vibration when cold but I think that might be the crank issue they have when cold. There is a software update for that but it makes it rev oddly.

Other than it, in Msport guise the 123d is just a cracking car and so is the 120d. The torque and handling is increadible fun. A super drivers car with diesel economy.

Make sure you buy used approved. There are some great deals to be had right now. If there is the slighest (make sure you drive it cold) judder in the clutch when moving of a slope in forward or reverse no matter how small walk as it will get worse.

Also clutch should be nice and light to use. heavy clutch in these cars is a sign of a problem.

Have 123d SE Auto Conv. Great car. Cruises at 70 actual at 2050 RPM, 45+ mpg. Twin turbos smooth as silk. Have not bothered to re-map as performance is fine for me.
