Is this right?

Just been to a local garage and requested replacement of 4 run flats on my wife's BMW 330D touring for pilot sport standard pneumatic tyres. They said they will not replace run flats with non-run flats without a letter/disclaimer from BMW. Have other people experienced this?

It'll happen. Had similar when I came off run flat Bridgestones for my Z4, wanted to move onto standard Eagle F1's, tyre fitter made me sign a disclaimer that they were not responsible if after fitting my new tyres that I fell off the road as I left the garage then in effect it was nothing to do with them.
Ironically on the new rubber the car handled brilliantly, still I guess tyre firms have to cover themselves, after all "we" are replacing standard equipment with non standard.
The other myth attached to this is that your insurance company need to be advised of the change and may not insure you or will insist on an increased premium. Informed my insurance company of the tyre change and they were not interested, in essence "as long as you have tyres on your wheels that comply with the width, size and depth then your insurance stands."

I went to my local tyre place I have always used, who took the runflats off my 19" wheels and put normal PS2's on, all he wanted was some money.
He has put Pirelli winter run flats on my 18" winter wheels at the front and a normal winter Kumho tyres at the back, they are fine and I have told the ins and they are not interested.
You can put ordinary tyres on run flat wheels but you cannot put run flats on normal wheels.
They are talking b

ks!Sounds like the local tyre place laying a log because of the "Injury Shyster for you" factor. Would BMW sue them if you got a blowout and were killed or injured resulting in bad press for BMW and a hefty claim against the tyre yard. Probably a bit over cautious but these days it's not if you're paranoid but if you're paranoid enough. Personal Injury claims go up by on average 60% during a recession. The tyre yard have probably been down that path before or know someone who has and are being carefull. Either that or they want to sell you the more expencive tyres to line their collective pockets.
