bmw e36 fault codes

Is this correct or have I been passed on some duff information?
I have a bmw e36 318is reg 97 and was told that if I switched it to ignition position 1 then depressed the brake all the way down then up five times it starts a fault code sequence?
Im not sure if im being led up a garden path here so thought I might see if any one else knew?

Doesn't work in Europe.
Foe US car, you could put the ignition on, press the accelerator 5 times within 5 secs, and it'd flash the codes via a check engine light.

Euro cars don't have the check engine light wired up though, so you won't see anything.
