just had my car remapped, driving along today, pulled out of a street, heard a pop and a cloud of black smoke came out the rear, now it drives ok but has no power. Does'nt smoke when i accelerate but there's a whining noise when the turbo should kick in. No warning lights. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I would say yes to the turbo, it does not sound like the swirl flaps.

DO NOT continue to drive it as it may start to run on its own oil and then blow the engine. What year is the car?

I blew my turbo a month ago same sysmptoms as yours, it cost £1300 to replace. But mine is a 320D.

It could just be a simple tubo hose that has split due to the increased pressure, so dont go changing the turbo until youve checked all the cheaper bits first...

Ah bugger forgot that bit, and I forget the other bit that can also result in the same symptoms.

more likely to be a turbo hose of some kind. had the exact same issue as OP the other week (non BMW) and it was a hose at the intercooler.

Could be a hose. Could be a cracked inlet manifold. Doesnt sound like a turbo. If there was/is lots of white smoke, then that would suggest turbo. Fingers crossed it's nothing too expensive.

Had the same problem with my 330d both times it was the intercooler hose that had "popped" off at the cooled side of the intercooler.
