My wife's 04-reg BMW X3 has a near full length glass sunroof that broke around 2-years ago. BMW declined to fix it, even though we've owned the car from new, it's low mileage and it has a full BMW Service history. They're talking about a grand plus to replace the whole unit. Apparently, it's a fault with the design and it's only a small part that's actually broken.

MY CHALLENGE TO YOU:
Anyone know how I can get this fixed for a decent price????

Thanks for reading smile

Hi,
This is a well known problem on X5's as well. I daren't even open mine !
It's probably the same pasrt that has failed on your X3, try asking on xdrivers.co.uk as there was someone on there a while back that repaired it himself.
Phil.

Cheers - couldn't find it, so I've posted the same question on that forum.

I too have the same problem! It appears from what I have read on www.bimmerfest.com that the sunroof cassettes on cars pre October 2005 are faulty! http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=... (scroll down & read all as very interesting) and http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=... (where you will find a modification PDF that you might get someone to sort out for you!)
My car is October 2004 and the panoramic sunroof was an extra. It stopped closing with the rear tilt staying up around 3 years ago. BMW charged me £50 to close the damn thing and said it would cost £2000 in parts and labour to replace. Recently I have had leaks in the car when it has rained and in particular to the rear where the stereo is and satnav and stuff that screwed up intermitantly my music, satnav computer and dashboard lights. At my wits end I mentioned this to a local garage that was going to do some touch up for me this week and I took it in to them this morning, only to find on collection tonight that they had not done the paint, had messed about with the sunroof that was once again open on tilt, the tube drain to the rear still leaking and to top it all just about every electric on the car now not working including windows, windscreen wipers, parking sensors, and when I took it in this morning everything was working! They washed their hands of it! I then drove to local BMW with no wipers and a driver side window open in the pouring rain and arrived just as they were closing. They got the window closed and it is now booked in there for Friday and I shall take all the stuff I found on the internet tonight including your post! OK I had a broken sunroof that was shut closed this morning that probably had a blocked drain and everything else was working just fine, but now I have a complete nightmare on my hands! Something needs to be done/said about these ruddy sunroofs as clearly BMW KNEW THEY WERE FAULTY, AND CERTAINLY IN THE USA THERE ARE A LOT OF ANGRY USERS! This is ridiculous, they should replace all these faulty roofs FOC.
