I'm getting 32mpg av out of mine, thats mostly 70 - 85mph motorway miles but also some urban miles.
Its not really thrashed senseless or driven like my mum does either but they do sound nice when you open it up.

You should get better than that for a diesel one... The figures sound ok for a 3 litre petrol car though!

I've got a e46 320d and 32mpg is what i get just doing nothing but short trips round town at <40mph with the engine cold all the time/spending half my life in traffic jams/etc. Perhaps you would get worse with a 3 litre diesel, especially if it's old like mine, but it surely wouldn't be THAT worse.

well you didn't specify it was a diesel!! about 28-32 average is what you'll get with a 330i, not owned a 330d to compare

Sticks.

Always worthwhile doing a search for a question like that.

In the real world the 330d is not much better on fuel than a 330i.. Maybe 5mpg in it. People who think that there 330d will average 50mpg are deluding themselves. 40mpg max on a run driving like a nun. Manual gearbox is quite a bit better on fuel tho.

330d's

I've had 6 of these over the last decade, so feel relatively qualified to comment!

Doing plenty of motorway miles, at outside lane of M40 speed, a 330d will happily average 45mpg. throw in a bit of town driving and it drops a little. All mine have averaged over 40mpg. All have been manuals. Tha auto is about 5mpg thirstier.

I've not driven on the M40 very much but to me outside lane speed means somewhere around 85mph and, based on my own experience with a manual E46 330cd, I'd say the chances of averaging 45mpg in those circumstances are the square root of bugger all!

I'd also counsel caution with taking the mpg figure off the trip computer; I've had a couple of E46's (the aforementioned diesel and an M3) and in both cases the fuel consumption was optimistic by a couple of mpg. Not suggesting the figures you quote are based purely on the computer but if they are that might go some way to explaining why they look good! Personally I don't think 330d's achieve the combined mpg unless they're doing long runs and (at least in the case of my 330cd) driven relatively gently!

I tend to do about 20k miles a year, so tend to change cars fairly often. There is no better all rounder IMHO. I did have a 535d for a while, but it didn't cut it. A diesel is bought to be economical and the 535d wasn't. My E46 M3 was almost as frugal.

If a 330d (manual) isn't resolutely doing 45mpg+ at a steady 80-85mph then there's something wrong with it. Time to look at air filter, injectors and perhaps oil separator.

Just worked out my last tank, as I have to do mileage for work. Was 568 miles from 12.5 gallons. Just over 45mpg. Mine's a 330cd manual. It's recently had oil/filter and air filter and I've done the swirl flap blanker modification. Apart from that, it's standard.

In that case I can only conclude there was something wrong with my 330cd! It was a manual and, if I was driving at a steady 80-85mph on the flat, I don't think it would have achieved 40 never mind 45mpg! From memory the quoted combined figure was only 42.5mpg so to exceed that whilst also doing a steady 85mph is, err, impressive.....

BMW 330i SPORT 2002 - Mway(average over 400miles, twice weekly) - 80mph average - 30.1 mpg according to trip comp.

IMHO pretty reasonable given the ease and pleasure to drive on a motorway.

They really are very good cars. Never going to set the world on fire performance wise, but more than acceptable for every day use. I've had a 330i, and would take the 330d over it 99% of the time. The only department the petrol does "better" than the diesel is sound. If that's not a major concern, then the 330d is the way to go.
