BMW E46 coupe front anti roll bar

Recently bought an e46 coupe. Having a poke around and found the top nylon bush of the arb droplink was broken so the arb is only connected on one side. Three questions. Why is this droplink so long? Why couldn't they use a rosejoint and connect to the bottom of the strut? Secondly can I just buy this nylon cup shaped bush and just whack it on with a rubber hammer? I can't figure out how that joint can transfer the force.
