Changing my M3 EVO for e39 530 diseasal
Discussion
Yep, can't believe those words have fallen from my lips, however I drove a 530d last night and while its no ball of fire, its not exactly a slovenly barge either.
Loved the auto box and poke at 2k rpm. Loved the comfort, space, relaxed quiet ride. Loved the fact that speed bumps were suddenly no longer things to be feared and avoided (although I still have the 355 for that). Loved being able to hear the radio and watch TV at the lights.
Apparently things to be aware of are suspension needing a refresh, auto box, cooling system and turbo failure.
I can feel some wafting coming on...

This reply is pretty common on these BMW diesel threads, but unless you do high mileage, get a 530i instead - great engine, less issue to worry about and not that thirsty if cruising on the motorway - my 530i Sport was manual, and BMW autoboxes crucify the mpg, but they do that to the diesel too.

Don't.
The Torque of the Diesel suits the car; the 3.0 petrol can feel a little strained by comparison.
Not much of a chore to work the rev range of such a lovely engine. The Torque of the Diesel suits the car; the 3.0 petrol can feel a little strained by comparison.
IMO of course.

Hi there,
the E39 is a great choice still, and the 530d is still very much sought after !
The usual Petrol Vs Diesel debate will always be there - so really it comes down to what you want.
Mine is a Diesel auto, and I love it. Averages 32.1 round town sometimes a little lower and on long runs easily sees 38-42 mpg depending on how much of a grandad speed I want to do!
I've had it re-mapped, EGR valve bypass, K&N induction kit and stainless steel exhaust back box fitted. The increase in power and torque is fantastic, the smooth power delivery is addictive and at motorway speeds the effortless way the speed builds up under that wave of torque is fantastic!
I've yet to do a side by side motorway test with a 530i petrol, but I'm fairly confident I'd be able to pull ahead and with less screaming of the engine - although the 530i petrol is perfectly suited to high revs if needed !
Cheers, Dennis!

I could see 36mpg if sat in 60-70mphish moving traffic.
