Stolen car keys
Discussion
If you are fully comp on the car and have house insurance surely one or the other should pick up the bill,
I'm not trying to add to your woes but I know someone who recently changed all the locks / keys / modules etc on his M3 for exactly the same reason and it was constantly refusing to start due to the complexity of the in built security not accepting the new items .

Hi R60EST. I am fully comp. The excess however is £400 together with an increased premium even though I have protected no claims discount. The insurance lady agreed that it would be prudent to get a quote for the job from BMW as it could be cheaper in the long term. I'll do this tomorrow and weigh up the options. Having thought about it, it will probably come down to the cost of BMW doing the locks vs £400 & an increased premium.

He paid out of his own pocket in the end , about £750 ish I think from BMW , he was keen to stop his car showing on HPI as stolen/recovered. His circumstances were slightly different , they took the keys then his car but parked it a short distance away to find out if it was fitted with a tracker , which it was. The starting problem was intermittent , just when BMW assured him it was all sorted it would refuse to start and back to square one. He was so fed up with it in the end he sold it. Regards

Might work out easier for you to do the same , sell the car , don't claim on the insurance and just add the replacement car onto your existing policy

BMW quotes ranged from £900 to £1100 for a change of locks. As we need a car we are going to go with the insurance claim and hope that it does not prove problematic.
Order a replacement key for the one stolen - trade the car in with full set of keysThe keys are no use to them without knowing where the car is

Bloody hell, where are you in the UK? It costs c£300 from a franchised dealer near me in the NW.You do ned to replace the locks & barrels though, as they will always be able to get into the car using the key blade. They won't be able to start it on the key though once recoded, if that's any reassurance.
I had a set of keys recoded, but left one out - it would open the car with the key, but none of the buttons worked and it wouldn't start it - as the immobiliser didn't recognise it.
That should (realistically) be more than enough.
Would this fall under household policy rather than motor?

Household only covers your house keys as standard, anything more is an extra. That should (realistically) be more than enough.

As the insurance company are now aware of the theft of the spare keys they said that I would have to have all locks & keys done or else the insurance on the car is null and void in the event of theft. On the night that it happened they wanted to take it to their own secure location but I have secured it elsewhere.
Edited to add; They want to see proof that it has been done.

What sort of key do you have? Is it the old diamond style? If you un programme then re-programme the remote function then whoever has the spare keys has to use the key in the door so the alarm will trigger. Wont stop them driving off but may prevent them from just coming and going quietly.
