I have a 2006 E53 X5. It is a special edition with almighty tyres and probably pretty useless in the snow. I am thinking of getting some wheels and tyres for the winter months. Dont want to spend alot but want something decent.
I have no idea what size or type to get - any ideas??

Talk to your local dealer to get confirmation of appropriate sizes etc and start the search from there. ebay.de might be worth a look as winter tyres (winterreifen) are much more commonly used over there.

Alternativdely the dealers seem to have reasonable deals. They have quoted me £1,700 to supply a set of 18" alloys with winter tyres to replace the current 20" wheels on summer tyres for our E70. They will store whichever set is not being used free of chrge too. Not sure how much labour they will want for exchanging the wheels.

My 2004 has 19" wheels that are 255s on the front and 285s on the rears. Tyres with decent tread (michelin Diamaris) coped just fine around Aberdeeshire last year. We had loads of snow and it was down to -19 at one point.
I'll just be putting some new ones on the front for this year.

4x4 without the correct tyres will not be great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ShJZnH3flQ

Also, you may have traction to start but when you need to come to a halt, those great big summer tyres will not be too much fun...

Winter tyres all the way!

Huw,

I've got an 04 X5, and picked up 4 BMW 17" alloys from the Bay (chap based in Derbyshire). Paid £100 for all 4, and there is only a 3mm knick on one alloy - the rest are pretty much unmarked. I'm budgeting on some Vredestein Wintrac extreme's (~£530 for 4x 235/65/R17 with the sizes taken from mytyres) that will be put on next month.

I hope this will do the job, and get me to and from work over the Peak District, and back to Cross Hands!
