Sacrilege...535d is it all that !
Discussion
I have an old leggyish 540 touring, had the opportunity to drive a loaded 535d sport yesterday, whilst it is much more modern and tauter to drive in some respects I find the throttle response quite laggy and "blunt" compared to the petrol V8... unpleasantly so. They shift ok but it's a bit of a crude device compared to the creamy silkiness of a petrol V8, still feel the tractorness inside at idle. Think all you diesel fanatics have forgot what a really smooth torquey engine with a linear throttle response is like. I do pay for it mind you 25 mpg vs 34mpg long term averages

Ive moved from an E39 M5 to a 535d.
Whilst it will never be a rival to the M car, it is still very good at what it does.
No its not 'crisp' or instant with regard to throttle imputs but it is a good compromise. You do not need instant throttle response in a daily driver. It is very good at getting me to and from work in a very relaxed and easy going manner.
I get to drive an E61 530d on a daily basis at work and legally take it to its limits which is what made me buy a 535d with my own money.
If I could justify and afford an E60 M5 then I would but the 535d is a great tool and is amazing when you consider it runs on tractor fuel.
My M5 was a daily driver, I dont believe in having something like an E39 - which is essentially a 5 seater saloon - and keeping it in the garage just for weekends.
For my circumstances - 90% commuting, the 535d - makes perfect sense.
It is however in no way an M car replacement, but then again it never professes to be. The straight line speed is the only facter with which some owners make the comparison.

Where a 535d comes into its own is when you remap it.
