E36 suspension advice

Hello,
I've had my 323i for just over a year now, and now that I've become used to it, I'm starting to feel the 12 years the car has been through before I got my hands on it. Don't want to go for a full on track car, just something that will firm up the ride, and should I ever encounter a track (next year probably), something that can cope. Been looking at springs and dampers, but I know that's only half the job. What about the mounts, bushes, struts etc? My knowledge in this area is pretty limited, so any advice would be much appreciated.
Had a look on the other threads on here with people talking about this sort of thing, but other than collecting a bunch of names and websites of where to buy parts and thinking I should get those, I haven't really learnt much.
On another note, my steering wheel has recently been squeaking and clicking as I turn it (as though something inside it is tightening). At times the power steering seems to cut out as it becomes quite heavy, and suddenly comes back. Other times, the wheel will 'lock' when turning, and I have to physically un turn the wheel as opposed to letting it slide through my fingers back to the original forwards position. Can't see anything wrong with it from, and two mechanics said they could see nothing wrong with it, and that the slip ring was fine. A third, disagreed. Has anyone got any ideas?
