I've started my hunt for an E60. I've got certain requirements such as sat nav and leather but apart from fancying a m sport I may settle for a SE.

However, I'm struggling to understand the wide variation in prices. I saw a pretty decent but base SE today 56 plate with 48k miles where the inde wanted 16.8k. We eventually got down to 13k. I've seen another SE with leather and sat nav, 07 plate with 39k miles at 15k. Im wondering whether this trader will come down a couple of k too. Alternatively, should I just keep on looking and wait for a good m sport to come on the scene?

£16.8k to £13k. Impressive.

Did you have a gun to head?

Teach me how to negotiate like that

Yeah I'm very surprised you got that much off, usually with a used car priced between £10k and £20k you may be able to negotiate £500 - £1000 off but that's it really. Am also surprised how high those prices are anyway for a 4-year old car. In 2006 a 520d SE would have cost £27k new before haggling, so assuming that is the same car your looking at £16k is a lot.

EDIT - Yes those prices are ridiculous, 2006 e60s with high miles start at £7k. What specific model are you after, I assume not a 520d then?

I agree. The car had recently come in and wasn't priced up. I think he may been playing me. Shame on him, but i think he's come down to below where it should be, circa 14k.

The SE is bad..... until you drive the M-Sport. Which is worse.

Blame the run flats.

OK. It's terrible. I had the misfortune to own one for 18 months. Luxury car ride it's not and never will be.

In fairness to the BMW uber-repmobile.

If you want a lugzurious ride at that price region (new), you buy a Merc. Or, for that matter, a Lexus. BMWs are aimed at those of a sporting bent (even the non-Sport ones).

Thanks guys. Test drove a 530d m sport. I found the car pretty powerful bit the wife found the ride pretty crashy!

I know of a very very nice 06 plate 535d 68,000 miles for 16k if you are interested.

One reason for price variation is that cars after March 2007 are facelift models with better interiors, higher quality materials and new front and rear lights.

I'm selling my E60 so I'd be interested to hear your take on prices. Mine's an '04 plate 530d SE with 98k miles, so unlikely to be of interest to you. It is however fully optioned up: comfort seats, adaptive xenons, bluetooth, nav, logic 7 hifi, advanced A/C.

For what it's worth on the differences between SE and M Sport - there's the obvious external looks. However, when I test drove them many moons ago, the M Sports all came with bigger 18" or 19" wheels and I couldn't live with the way they tramline so much and sniff out every single camber change in the road. On the plus side the M Sport does feel much sharper when you're pressing on. The SE is a compromise between comfort and sport, but it means it never really excels. It's not so soft that it rolls around everywhere when you press on, but it is too easy to run out of travel on the suspension and feel the bump stops. People like to bang on about run flats and I swapped to non runflats out of curiosity. To be honest the ride is a bit better - it's less busy on scarred tarmac at 30MPH speeds. But overall the improvement is marginal and you lose the convenience of not having to stop when you puncture (happened to me once over 98k miles). RFTs aren't so expensive if you shop around.

Anyway, good luck with your quest. They're outstanding cars. I'd be fascinated to know what you think a realistic sale price for mine might be though.

If I want a sports car I'll buy one. The ride on the 5 series was woeful. Hence why I no longer have it.

Cheers Trilby. I'vd decided to opt for for a face lift model. To be honest I'm not sure about the prices for one that's run 98k.

Thanks for the input. I'm actually going to drive a E280/E320 jus to compare the ride.

post 2007 are LCI models, life cycle impulse (LCI) upgrade, changes include xenon lights, rears were upgraded to, interior switch gear upgrade, idrive improved and door cards redesigned. Most importantly engine management upgrade, in the case of the 520d from 163 bhp to 177bhp with a decrease in CO2, hence lower tax and more MPG.

All in all well worth buying a newer model.

BEWARE slight lag exists between LCI upgrade and engine upgrade, a few car are upgrades with the older engine not many tho, but the V5C should give you the info you need.

FWIW, I drove a 57 plate 525d comfort, back to back with a 57 plate E280CDI Sport. I bought the Mercedes and loved it for every second, right up to the point that Mercedes wrote it off. Handling and ride quality was fantastic, whilst the interior comfort was miles ahead. It's well worth having a look at the Mercedes.
