I know this may generate a slightly biased response, but was hoping to hear from someone who has owned both.

My daily driver is a 911 and my wifes is a Mini JCW, so having two kids we need to get a 3rd car for 'family' trips. It will probably only get used at weekends and the odd 400-500 mile return trip.

I am thinking of getting either an A8 or a 7 series about 2005/6 with say 50-60K on the clock for around £13-15K. Not too bothered about fuel consumption, so I am thinking best bang for buck would be V8 (or V12) petrol.

Any thoughts on the benefits or drawbacks from one over the other?

A8 is a beautiful car, the 7 Series of the same era is ugly and bloated and probably has less toys than the Audi.

I am pretty much a BMW man, but I would take the A8 over the 7.

On the A8, V8 petrol engines are due a Cambelt change at 80k, and is quite expensive £1,500 from Audi, £750 independent. Also the Air Suspension is quite complicated, check it works properly with no funny noises.

I had one car with both these problems, needless to say I didn't make a record profit out of that one. Still a very car though.

Thanks for that, I'll keep my eyes open!

Cambelt change for £1500 - ouch!
