Hi guys,

Just wanted to check something out for my own piece of mind. We bought an approved used E91 325i Touring at the end of last year. It's a late 2005 car, so assume its the N52 engine?

Anyway, when we bought it, it had only covered 36k miles, and its now on 41k miles - so has done ~ 5k miles in our ownership. Very pleased with the car, but a bit alarmed that its used 2 litres of oil in 5k miles.

I know that the earlier 6 cylinder petrol engines in the E46 were known to like a drink of oil, but is this also the case with the newer engines? And does 1 litre of oil every 2500 miles sound excessive? If it is likely to be indicative of a problem, since its still under the BMW AUC warranty until the end of December, I'd like to get it sorted before it becomes my expense :-)

Cheers,

Steve.

IIRC BMW quote 600 miles/litre as their threshold.

My Z4 3.0Si (so tha later engine) didn't use any oil over the 2 years, 10K I had it - included a heavy trip to the Nurburgring and being used for mostly short journey's - so it had the type of use where you would expect high oil usage.

Have the same engine in my 130i at the moment - haven't had it long enough to see if it does burn oil though.

Personally I think an engine like this type using a lot of oil is not too good.

Thanks for your replies guys.

We've not covered that many miles this year because my wife (the main driver) is currently on maternity leave. So most journeys have been 10 to 20 mile round-trips, which I guess would be considered short journeys, with the occasional longer motorway jaunt thrown in.

I had wondered about changing the oil and filter, because I believe it might have sat on the dealers forecourt for a few months before we bought it (seems to be the case from looking at the MOT history on-line). But at this rate of consumption, the oil will have changed itself soon wink

I'll have a word with the dealer and see what they think, regarding whether its worth further investigation.

Very interesting steve. I've had a '55 plate 325i tourer since last autumn, its just turned 41k miles, and its gone through oil at a similar rate in the 11k I've driven it.

I've seen no evidence of where the oil is going, i.e. not found any leaks around the engine, and had a mate follow to look for any puffs of smoke, again negative. Otherwise it drives very nicely.

It had an oil service at 36k at the main dealer, made no difference to the oil consumption. I do wonder if the early N52 engines may suffer similar PCV issues to the older M54 3.0, and seems the N52 PCV system was modified in '07: http://www.e90post.com/forums/attachment.php?attac...

I don't have a main dealer warranty, so please let me know if they find anything.
