How does this work then? I've got the rear aux in on our '02 X5, and I've plugged a ipod in but I can't get an aux source? I've got nav with DSP if that makes a difference?

I Think you have the same system as our X3, if so then you need to just keep pressing MODE until you get to "aux" the same way you change from radio to cd player etc... just keep pressing until you find aux.

Plug in
Put the head unit in AUX mode
Press play on the ipod and make sure the volume's not turned down!

I can't seem to get 'aux' when going through the sources annoyingly.

Does the aux-in sense a signal at all?

No it shouldn't do. on the X3 you can get it to find aux without plugging anything in.

I think it's aux video in. When I plug my phone in - via the TV is the only way it works - I get the sound (poorly) and some interference via the screen. I'm guessing that plugging a video player in would get an image on the screen.

Yeah, just a 3.5mm aux cable. you can get them most places these days - maybe even a decent supermarket.

The AUX in from the rear socket on x5 will not work ipod/iphone due the signal level being too low from the ipod/iphone. It's was designed to work with a DVD player etc. If you want to connect your ipod/iphone you will need to purcahse an AUX cable from BMW which connects to the the rear of the 16:9 screen one end and provides a 3.5mm jack the other. once connected pressing the mode button will show AUX on screen, then just plug your ipod/iphone to the 3.5mm jack side and then play music.

Cheers mate! Luckily I whipped the aux-in out of my M3 before I sold it. Will give it a go on the weekend.
