HI all,

As a new member to PH hello, I'm thinking here would be the best place to find some answers from you guys & gals, having checked out the "Search" I came up empty on the BMW 335.

This is my current situation

BMW 330d M Sport 4dr "53" plate with 145k motorway miles, drive & runs faultlessly with impressive mpg, however I've now had it three trouble free yrs & put 60k miles on it, to say I will be sad to let it go will be an understatement.

But I've heard the calling of a 335, now sense tells me that I should stick with the D, I have also driven the Petrol which I wasn't expecting to like, but how wrong was I!.

I'm not against either, and will have an option of getting fuel card in April through my company.

From what I can see on the D - this would be an Auto or Auto + Paddles, how good are these? it would be my first auto & have always liked manual gearboxes, I am on the motorway more often that not, so not sure it would be a problem, I just like driving so don't want to loose the experiance/fun as & when I get on country roads.

That Said

The petrol drives really well, I would potentially have to foot the fuel bill between now & April but think it could be well worth it.

This then leads me to what options are available & worth paying for, I would be looking in the £17.5k mark, Would prefer the newest possible with as many options as I could afford.

what would you do ??

I'm going through this decision making process at the moment but I think I've ruled out the 335d based on the fact that regardless of how quick it is, it's still an automatic diesel, so it sounds diesely at idle, it feels diesely around town, its basically... a diesel.

So for me its between 330i and 335i. I just love the silky smoothness of a 6 cylinder petrol engine.

Make sure you get a '57 plate one or later. Personally I think I'm going to hang on until the 58 plate ones with the updated iDrive are £20k.

Every-time I get into my 'i' it makes me smile. Had the 'd' previously and it was a fantastic car but the combination of brute force acceleration, manual gearbox and sound make the petrol my preference. The only negative would be the exceptionally rigid m-sport suspension (non run-flats might help) and slightly high consumption. However if my memory serves the latest model with the revised engine has significantly better consumption. Just my two pence worth....

What sort of fuel consumption do you get?

I honestly couldnt care less what it gets around town or when I'm on a hoon but my 530i will do 35mpg on the Motorway if I set cruise to 70-80mph. My 530i has the same combined economy figure as an earlier 335i, so I'm hoping the same is true of the 335i.

Is it?

Cruise is standard. Active is AFAIA keeps you at a safe distance from the car in front, I have never felt the need for it.
Auto wipers and auto dip/main headlights are useful extras.

Thanks M5Dave for the VED info & Mr E Driver for the tech link.

Primarily looking at the M-Sport Coupe, But how does the Hard top Convertable stack up ? how much stiffness is lost in the chassis?

I have seen DAB radio listed on sellers adverts, is this an upgrade module that can be added if not already fitted ?.

cheers

Fox I think I might do a tiny bit better than that in my 2008 330i (2-3 mpg more) so I would expect it might be a bit less than that in a 335i. Probably not enough to make it a determining factor unless you are tighter than a duck's arse but as well to get into it with your eyes open smile

DAB is an extra which is very expensive and difficult to fit post build, if it has it then it's worth it.

Both great cars.

Got my 335d partly because of the mileage and some 335i's seem to have a long string of issues with HPFP, injectors, coil packs etc.

I always get over 40mpg to a full tank. Up to 47mpg on the m-way. But the 335i is more fun to drive on a hoon.

The auto box is awesome for a commute and it deals with overtake with immense ease. But pushing on, on the twisties, nothing beats a manual!

got the 335d took it on an early morning drive to silverstone the other sunday (Sunday service) was in convoy with atom, gt3, RS4 and vantage plus some other metal (MX5's and a saab) lets just say we lost the other metal and the 335d surprised, it was a good drive (i have the coupe) and much to the annoyance other great metal returned 28 mpg.... whilst they were getting around 8 smile

so it did a good job but I did miss the noise of a petrol!! if I didn't have to worry about mpg I would have the 335i or M3, but the 335d as a motorway slayer its epic and wont disappoint....
