Looking for help on owning/running the BMW as prefer it to the XC90.

What should I look out for (2004/54 with lowish miles)when purchasing, plus an idea of what goes wrong and running costs. Do not expect more than 20ish MPG and anticipate hatred by the lentilists.

Great car IMO! Don't expect to get 20mpg if you do much town driving!

+1 - mate of mine has an E70 with the big petrol engine - gets around 14-16 MPG in town.

over 2.5 yrs, averaged 18mpg in my 4.8is, max was 23.9, but that was steady on m1 for 100miles. the noise is worth it alone.
now got a 3.0sd and only averages 25mpg

Hi,just recently bought one, 2004/54 plate with 37,000 miles on it in le mans blue.
I am really enjoying it,sounds lovely & is relatively quick for 2.2tonnes & extremely comfy.
Fuel consumption is currently 22mpg but never seen above 25mpg!
If you plan to do big miles your probably better off with a 3.0d...but if not would defo recommend a v8.
The sound just keeps putting a big smile on my face...but not the visit to the pumps!
Good luck with your search, you wont be disappointed.

Have had my 4.8is for 2yrs 4 mths now.

Apart from routine servicing the only thing to go wrong on mine was both of the front bellows on the air suspension units giving way (which essentially meant the whole of the front of the car dropped and was rubbing on tyres!). Not a cheap fix at £1200+VAT and apparantly the air bellows on each corner only have a finite life (similar to that on range rovers of a certain era). So my advice would be to get yourself under the car and inspect each wheel arch as to the condition of each unit (rubber air bellow attached to suspension strut), and have a good inspection when vehicle is at both full ride height and lower height. If you can, buy with warranty.

Other than that, they are big old units and hard wearing on brake pads and discs, tyres as well as normal suspension components.

I have had average of almost 20mpg over my ownership. As others have sad, noise is great and fairly rapid when pushed. Otherwise quite reasonable to run as insurance OK and road tax Ok as long as pre March 2006 from memory.

Mine's in Imola Red which I had second thoughts about buying originally but in 28 months I have not seen a single other X5 in this colour on the roads and quite often gets complimented. I also like the dark grey (sterling?) and deep blue (le mans?) but not sure it suits black or silver so well.

Thanks.

Advice (continued) welcome and appreciated. I am keeping away from silver/black but find myself drawn to light (cream?) interior. The one that I initially liked has no SAT NAV/Blue-Tooth and has a alcantra. Assume SAT NAV/Blue-Tooth is a "must have"?

I think that most were specced with sat nav / bluetooth and resale may be difficult without. However, the nav is now getting / looking a little out of date (despite update discs) and whilst bluetooth good, it's nothing a stand-alone tom-tom cannot do for example. Aside from the resale aspect I would not consider satnav/bluetooth essential in retrospect as you can have better as standalone unit nowadays. The TV unit only works clearly with in a very good signal area and whilst good for novelty value the real life benefit of it is minimal.

I almost bought one with cream interior extended leather and panoramic sunroof with really did brighten up the interior. Mine is black and seems to have stood up well bearing in mind it's 6 years old soon.
