problems connecting my phone via bluetooth to my new X3!

Just spent this afternoon trying to connect my phone to my new BMW X3 which is bluetooth enabled!
[pressing the BT button for 3 seconds with the ignition off, then leaving it pressed for 3 more with ignition in position 1]
Followed the instructions repeatedly but it (the car) just kept telling me to activate the phone (which it was).
Only once did it say on screen it was 'pairing with the device' (not sure what i did differently that time) but it just stayed the same for 10 minutes and progressed no further!
Am I being thick?
my phone is an iphone (1st generation)
